With almost 400 guests, the Breaking Bread event was a great success. So much wonderful produce and dairy donated by countless local farms resulted in a delicious dinner of soups, salads, breads, and dessert. The Hall High School kids were so enthusiastic and helpful, working right alongside the chefs. And the beautifully handmade bowls! What a great keepsake from a wonderful event which raised over $2700 to help feed those in need in our area. Congratulations to everyone involved! Photos courtesy of Lianna Pevar.
Growing Great Schools was founded in 2010 by 3 mothers from Norfeldt, Charter Oak, and Bugbee who were fed up with school lunch… and believe our kids deserve better. The founders contend that the cafeteria alone is not to blame. Children need to understand WHERE their food comes from and to be actively engaged in the process - through farmer’s markets, school gardens, cooking classes, nutrition education and eco-education. It’s this connection that has been lost along the way. Parents can be part of the solution, not just passive bystanders!
All 11 elementary schools in West Hartford are now involved in Growing Great Schools in some capacity. We hope this website will be a resource for ANY school on how to start and maintain these fantastic programs. The collaboration of parent groups ACROSS our district makes this organizaton unique, and we know we have strength in numbers!
