Caribbean Lunch Tasting–a huge success!

There was a tropical feeling in West Hartford school cafeterias on April 9th, as the students were treated to a Caribbean lunch, courtesy of West Hartford Nutrition Services and our wonderful GGS Chefs! At all eleven elementary schools, students had the option to purchase either the Reggae Chicken Wrap or Panko Baked Tilapia with Caribbean Rice and Beans. Students were also given the opportunity to taste a sample of the Reggae Chicken Wrap. Our group of terrific parent volunteers helped pass out samples of the chicken dish, while others polled the students to get their opinion on whatever dish they ordered for lunch.

Both dishes were given high marks by the students, and it was a real treat to have baked fish in school! As far as our Chefs go, they could be found in the kitchen helping to execute a delicious lunch, on the line serving up food, and out in the cafeteria gathering feedback from the children. It was a festive atmosphere, with some schools featuring tropical decor and music! Our thanks go out to Nutrition Services, our generous Chefs and all of the amazing parents that helped out in the cafeteria. Also, the students deserve a big thank you for their willingness to try some new foods and share their opinions with us. The Reggae Chicken Wrap was the winner for this tasting, and it has already been added to the permanent lunch menu!

Alicia Brown, Rita Neal, and Caroline Correia from Growing Great Schools plan to attend and bring back much useful and needed information! We’re looking forward to finally meeting John Turenne from Sustainable Food Systems. It should be a great opportunity to learn new things and share information with other programs in the region.
